A Breast Cancer Awareness Message – Our Family’s Experience
Our journey began when I consulted Dr. Mallika Dhanda regarding a lump in my mother’s left breast. She advised us to undergo a mammography, which reported the finding as BI-RADS III (Probably Benign).
Although this classification generally indicates a probably benign finding, Dr. Mallika Dhanda recommended a biopsy for further evaluation. To our surprise, the biopsy detected breast cancer.
This experience made us realise that a BI-RADS III report should not be taken as an absolute assurance that there is no cancer. While the likelihood of malignancy is low, cancer cannot be completely ruled out.
I am sincerely thankful to Dr. Mallika Dhanda for her timely advice and for recommending further investigation, which helped detect my mother’s cancer.
Through sharing our experience, I would like to spread awareness among other families that a BI-RADS III report should not be ignored, and patients must follow their doctor’s advice regarding further investigations and follow-up. Early evaluation and timely diagnosis are extremely important in the fight against breast cancer.
